As much as buying a collar can be extremely exciting, there are pro’s and con’s to your cat wearing a collar. Collars can help make sure your cat can be identified if they ever went missing and they allow people to know your cat is owned. However, there are things that you need to be careful with. If collars are too tight or get caught they can cause problems. Therefore, there are a couple of things to consider if you decide to buy a collar for your cat.

Quick Release

The single most important part of a cat’s collar is to ensure that it is a “Quick release” collar. This ensures if your cat ever got caught, the collar can snap off to stop your cat getting stuck. Test it out when it arrives to ensure you are confident it will release if it gets caught.

Top Tip: Don’t spend too much and have a few spares. It’s likely your cat will lose their collar at some point so having spare with definitely be handy.

Identity Tag

Getting a tag to attach to the collar with identification details can help reunite you with your cat if they ever went missing.

Top Tip: Buy several cheap tags in case your cat loses their collar.

When you put a new collar on your cat, make sure there is enough space to place two fingers easily under the collar. This way the collar is loose enough to prevent any issues, but tight enough to reduce the chance of getting caught.
